Empowering Progress: The Inspiring WBE Collaboration Between Klein Contracting and 84 Lumber

84 Lumber, a proud certified Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE), is more than just a lumber supplier. Known for its expertise in building, partnership, and growth, the company actively supports and collaborates with numerous woman-owned firms within the industry. Under the leadership of owner and CEO Maggie Hardy, the company is dedicated to empowering women-owned businesses. Since 2011, 84 Lumber has earned over 35 certifications, showcasing its industry commitment. In 2021, the company leveraged this expertise to launch a WBE Certification workshop, designed to simplify the certification process for women. This initiative has empowered and inspired hundreds of women to pursue certification, significantly enhancing their business opportunities.

Klein Contracting, a WBE-certified company founded in 1989 and co-owned by Candace Klein, is one of those firms. On August 21, 2006, Klein Contracting became a Women’s Business Enterprise Certified Customer under 84 Lumber. Based in Doraville, Georgia, this company specializes in commercial low-slope roofing and re-roofing services across the Southeastern United States.

Women comprise only 11 percent of the construction workforce, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Klein Contracting is breaking barriers and excelling in a traditionally male-dominated field. Klein and her team take great pride in managing complex projects and creating lasting structures while challenging stereotypes along the way. But the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Klein acknowledges encountering gender bias from clients and within the industry itself.

“Women are essential to the construction industry for several reasons,” said Klein. “They bring diverse perspectives and problem-solving skills that lead to innovative solutions and better outcomes. The industry faces numerous challenges, including regulatory, environmental, material, and cost issues. It takes forward-thinking and creativity to address these effectively. The more diversity at the table, the greater the likelihood of solving problems quickly.”

Despite facing setbacks, her impressive portfolio has opened doors to high-profile opportunities. Klein consciously chooses to only collaborate with companies that embrace diversity, believing that there’s a vast pool of clients who actively support inclusivity and welcome women in the field.

A standout project for Klein Contracting was its pivotal role in the development of the Hilton Signia Atlanta, one of the tallest buildings in Atlanta, Georgia, at an impressive 425 feet. This project, nominated for the prestigious Gold Circle Award by Skanska – which Klein Contracting previously won in 2018 – perfectly aligned with the company’s vision. The Hilton Signia project represents a transformative milestone, marking the first development under the Signia brand and significantly expanding Atlanta's hospitality sector. Strategically located next to the Georgia World Congress Center, and within walking distance of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, it caters to a diverse clientele, from business travelers to sports enthusiasts. This development not only enhances Atlanta’s reputation as a premier destination but also sets a new benchmark for luxury accommodations in the region.

At the heart of Klein Contracting’s success is its remarkable partnership with 84 Lumber.

“84 Lumber not only offers highly competitive pricing, but their commitment to service is unmatched,” said Klein. “While many companies fell short during the supply chain crisis, 84 Lumber continued leaning in to find solutions.”

Looking ahead, Klein Contracting is excited to expand its portfolio with more high-profile projects while continuing to invest in its team’s professional development. Ensuring exceptional service to clients remains a cornerstone of the company’s mission.
